How To Build Your Wall Bed on a Budget

Author: NOW MG January 21, 2020

When you need extra space, but you’re working within a budget, a Wall Bed can provide an affordable solution. We’ll show you how you can gain the flexible space you need without breaking the bank.

Choose Budget Friendly Materials

Most Wall Beds are manufactured using melamine or wood veneer, as these materials are more cost effective than solid wood.

What is melamine?

Melamine is a hard resin used to cover a substrate such as particle board, MDF or plywood. The manufacturer typically bonds a decorative paper to the material underneath through a heated manufacturing process. The result is a plastic-like building material that looks like wood grain or other color or texture, depending on the look of the decorative paper used. Melamine is the most budget-friendly material used to construct a wall bed.

What is wood veneer?

A wood veneer is a thin layer of hardwood – usually less than 1/8th of an inch – bonded to plywood underneath. This process allows furniture makers to create beautiful pieces with a real wood look at a more cost effective price point. As the outer layer of a wood veneer is real hardwood, it can be sanded (very carefully with the grain), stained and painted. Wood veneer is also an excellent choice for saving money.

Use Your Own Mattress

You can purchase a mattress with your new Wall Bed, but many buyers are surprised to learn that you can use your own mattress as well. A common misconception is that wall beds require the use of a special custom mattress. That is not the case at all. You can use any innerspring mattress up to 10” thick. No box spring is required. You can also use foam or sleep number beds with adjustment of bed springs.

Eliminate the Extras

A basic wall bed unit without all the bells and whistles will provide the flexibility you need in your space, without the added price tag. Of course, if needed, there are many add-ons and customizations you can make to give you the wall bed you need – including cabinetry, hardware, custom finishes and even a mattress.

Complete Your Own Installation

Installing your own wall bed is not difficult. In fact, the installation of a wall bed can be done by almost anyone. Written instructions are provided and installation of a complete bed unit shouldn’t take more than 2-3 hours. Each side cabinet will take 1 to 2 hours using normal household tools. No special tools are needed.
